October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October is National Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
Registered Nurse and health educator with the Nodaway County Health Department, Kathrynn Hawley, says the main group affected is women age 50 or older.

"The American Cancer Society recommendations for early detection of breast cancer - and this is a guideline for women at average risk for breast cancer, ages 40 to 44 - women should have a choice to start annual breast cancer screenings with mammograms if they wish to do so.  At ages 45 to 54, women should get mammograms every year and at age 55 or older, it's recommended women can switch to mammograms every 2 years or continue yearly screenings.  Screenings should continue as long as the woman is in good health and is expected to live 10 years or more."

Hawley also says there are many symptoms that can indicate breast cancer.

"Some of the symptoms of breast cancer include a possible new lump in the breast or under the armpit, thickening or swelling of part of the breast, irritation or dimpling of the breast skin, redness or flaky skin in the nipple area of the breast, pulling in of the nipple or pain in the nipple area, nipple discharge other than breast milk and this can include blood, any change in the size or shape of the breast, pain in any area of the breast.  It's important to know how your breasts look and feel and to stay on top of that.  If you have any concerns, any signs or symptoms that worry you, it's best to see your doctor right away."
